The Personal Story

Kittyboy in our office, circa 1998.I have a degree in History (lucrative!) from Louisiana State University. Two weeks after graduation I moved to Atlanta, Georgia. I didn't have a job, a place to live, or any marketable skills, but I did have an empty bank account and the desire to earn a decent living. My first job out of college was working retail (so glad I got that degree). The money I earned barely put me above poverty level, so I got a second job painting designs on t-shirts. If I remember correctly, I was paid $2.50 for each garment I completed — it wasn't a sweatshop, but it was close.

My first real career position was working for Tandem Computers (now owned by Compaq). I was promoted several times and held four different positions in their employee communications group in the Atlanta and Cupertino (Silicon Valley) offices. I have fond memories of my time with this company and I had many wonderful mentors who taught me about the business world.

One of my responsibilities for Tandem involved serving as editor and designer of the America's Division intranet site. The year was 1996 and there weren't a lot of people seeking out careers in the online arena. I took a 4-hour HTML class and, as they say, the rest is history.

When I was informed my position at Tandem was morphing from online communications to event planning I decided it was time to strike out on my own to see if I could make it as a self-employed freelance designer. I didn't have any clients and didn't even own my own computer, but I was determined to give it a try.

Here's a quick glance at some of the early projects you won't find in my portfolio:

  • Designing risqué banner ads for a company in Nevada (fledgling Internet porn).

  • Being the "clicker" for the keynote presentation at the 1998 Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration at The King Center in Atlanta. My job was to advance to the next slide when the speaker hit certain queues. I had to get an FBI clearance since then Vice President Al Gore was in attendance.

  • Making a tri-fold poster board presentation for an Atlanta law firm to use at an internal meeting. The materials were foamcore, rubber cement, and color photos. I thought it looked like a grade school science fair project, but the client was happy.

I began to amass a list of respectable clients and projects and soon I was able to focus solely on online services (although I still take on an occasional PowerPoint presentation). Over the years I've tried to keep my individuality and sense of humor. Using the cat motif as a jumping-off point, some of the company slogans I've used include:

  • We think outside the litterbox

  • Hairball-free work zone

    and

  • Buiding hairball-free websites since 1997

So, that's my story. Keep reading this page for more info about the projects I've worked on over the years. Also, make sure to view the writing, web and film sections of this site for more specifics.

And, for those of you who are wondering how I came up with "KITTYBOY Creations," the name was derived from my Siamese cat. Kittyboy was the first pet I had as an adult and he added some much-needed responsibility to my life. He is pictured above holding my mouse hostage. He died earlier this year at the ripe old feline age of 15. When I first started out it was just the two of us. He would lay on my terminal and stare at me while I worked so I named the company after him since he deemed himself my Muse.

Her script Make Me a Match won the 2004 Southeastern Media Award and a prize package of $100,000 in film-related services and rentals to assist in the film’s production. The award is considered one of the "Best Film Festival Prizes Awarded" per Chris Gore’s Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide, 3rd Edition and beat out projects with indie luminaries such as David Gordon Green attached.
